The Technische Universität Darmstadt is one of the best-known universities in Germany, in particular in the engineering disciplines.

The chair for "Multimedia Communications Lab (KOM)" at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, headed by Prof Ralf Steinmetz, was founded in 1996. It is active in the communication and multimedia systems research areas. KOM cooperates closely with various industry R&D laboratories and participates in European projects such as the “M3I - Market Managed Multi-service Internet”, “MMAPPS – Market Managed of Peer to Peer Services”, “E-Net”, “E-Next” and “CONTENT“ projects among others. KOM has currently 41 research staff members. Research areas are knowledge media including technology enhanced learning, networked gaming, serious gaming, peer-to-peer systems, IT architectures, quality of service in broadband and in mobile/ad hoc networks, and multimedia services and media distribution. The results of this research are published and presented in both national and international scientific journals and conferences.

The serious gaming group has been set up December 2008 based on the former Digital Storytelling group at ZGDV and is headed by Dr. Stefan Göbel.
In 80Days, TUD takes the role of ZGDV and is responsible for all issues related to adaptive, interactive storytelling . This includes the development of a theoretical framework for adaptive storytelling, the development of a Story Engine and a Story Editor.
